Cloud pattern Lacquer Plate

Han Dynasty Lacquer Plate with abstract cloud form decoration.

Description

The center of this lacquer plate is decorated with sacred cloud. The dark color black ground allows the red cloud to appear more mysterious way. The circle next to it is the traditional geometrical design. The rim is a spray of spots. The back of the plate is smooth and plain in black. Obviously half of it has deteriorated over time by immersing in water. More importantly it is due to the lack of the professional dehydration treatment for the fragile material, causing a serious shrinkage. It is such a pity that half of it was deformed and disintegrated. Never the less the contras of the two sides still offers us an interesting study piece.

Circa Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD).
